SUMMARY:How can unions fight for refugee rights?
DESCRIPTION:Event organised by Unionists for Refugees\n\nDate: October 2\nT
 ime: 6:30-8pm\nLocation: 535 Elizabeth St\, Melbourne CBD\n\nSPEAKERS\n\nM
ichele O'Neil\, President of the ACTU\nMichael Clifford\, secretary of the
Queensland Council of Unions\, heavily involved in the union fight to sav
e Baby Asha (by video link)\nMatt Kunkel\, Director of the Migrant Workers
Centre\nGhanieh Daghagheleh\, who came to Australia by boat in 2013 and i
s with the ANMF\nLucy Honan from Teachers from Refugees (chair)\n\nThe Lib
eral government that's bringing in more anti-union laws\, cutting penalty
rates and creating a wages crisis is the same government that's locked up
refugees on Manus island and Nauru for six years.\n\nThe government that w
on't increase Newstart\, refuses to act on the climate emergency\, and is
proud of being Trump's mate has stood by as 12 refugees have died and many
dozens more have self-harmed.\n\nAs unionists\, we say "touch one\, touch
all". And that means giving solidarity to our brothers and sisters trappe
d in Morrison and Dutton's cruel system and taking a stand against the rac
ism they use to divide our communities and workplaces.\n\nUnions have a pr
oud history of standing up for justice. We took a stand against Apartheid
in South Africa\, we supported the East Timorese people's fight for freedo
 m. And we need to take a stand again for refugee rights. Join us for an im
portant discussion on how unions can fight for refugee rights: close the d
etention centres\, bring them here and let them stay!
