SUMMARY:Public forum – Stateless: detention hasn't changed
DESCRIPTION:Public Forum - Stateless: Detention hasn't changed\nhttps://www
 .facebook.com/events/552669148680907/\n\nSpeakers:\nPamela Curr - long tim
e refugee advocate who took some of the original calls from refugees about
Cornelia Rau\nMoz from Manus (via skype) - refugee\, musician and activis
t currently imprisoned in the Mantra hotel\n\nThe ABC TV series Stateless
tells the story of Cornelia Rau an Australian permanent resident with a me
ntal illness detained by the Immigration Department for ten months between
2004 and 2005. She was caught up in a brutal system of cruelty to refugee
s for political purposes. Immigration officials displayed the same callous
ness towards her as to refugees\, saying it was her responsibility to iden
tify herself not theirs. There was outrage at the time\, but nothing has c
hanged. In June 2017 Australian Border Force admitted to illegally detaini
ng two Australian citizens on Christmas Island.\n\nToday the cruelty conti
nues. Around 400 refugees remain held offshore on Nauru and PNG - for almo
st 7 years now. 250 refugees brought to Australia for medical treatment ar
e imprisoned across Australia. Hundreds more refugees are detained on the
mainland\, some for over ten years. Come and discuss why the barbaric dete
ntion system is still in place and how we can break it\, and free the refu
 gees.\n\nCall Chris on 0403 013 183 for more info
